Stories on Building Just Peace:
John Paul Lederach, PhD.
Tuesday, July 10 - 7:30 p.m. Founders Room
Stories on Building Just Peace will be the topic of a lecture given by John Paul Lederach, a professor of sociology and conflict studies at Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) in Harrisonburg, Va. This lecture is hosted by the Center for Mission Research and Study at Maryknoll (CMRSM) and is part of their Summer at Maryknoll 2001 program entitled "People to People Peacemaking." Dr. Lederach is the founding director of EMU’s Conflict Transformation Program, and its associated Institute for Justice and Peacebuilding. Lederach, who holds a doctorate from the University of Colorado, has worked in international conciliation for more than 20 years, as a peacebuilding practitioner, trainer, and consultant. A pioneer in developing methods of conflict resolution, he has advised the highest-level government officials and national opposition movements in war-torn settings such as Nicaragua, Somalia, Northern Ireland, the Basque Provinces, and the Philippines. Widely published in both English and Spanish, his books include Preparing for Peace (1995) and The Journey Toward Reconciliation (1999).

R. Scott Appleby will be the respondent for Lederach’s lecture, Stories on Building Just Peace. Appleby is the Director of the Kroc Institute for International Studies at Notre Dame, Indiana. In his work and publications, he examines the roots of religious violence and the potential of religious violence.

Established in 1993, CMRSM’s central purpose is to investigate and enhance understanding of the trends, challenges, and contexts of mission among Christians and people of all faiths. The Center concentrates its efforts in the areas of mission education, globalization, and peacemaking. Both this lecture and an exhibit of the artworks of Maryknoll Sister Joanna Chan, are part of CMRSM’s "People to People Peacemaking" program. These events will be held at the Maryknoll Society Center, 55 Ryder Road, Ossining, N.Y. and are open to the public free of charge. For more information about both events, please call the Center for Mission Research and Study at Maryknoll at (914) 941-7590, x2426.
