June 27: Day of prayer and fasting for Zimbabwe

Election run-off to be held

Jun 19, 2008 - On Friday June 27, when Zimbabweans return to polling stations to vote in a run-off presidential election, people around the world are invited to join in a day of prayer and fasting, in whatever form they are able, for the people of Zimbabwe.

Also, please consider joining the World Council of Churches (WCC) for a day of prayer on Sunday, June 22 as the beginning of a season of prayer for the people and government of Zimbabwe.

Text of WCC invitation letter.

The run-off election – between incumbent Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai – is just one aspect of the tragic situation in Zimbabwe, where suppressed human rights, drought, severe food scarcity and a devastated economy merge to create significant social instability.

We pray for the strength and resolution of Zimbabwe’s people to continue to advocate for truth and justice at all levels. We pray that peace will prevail, and that the immense suffering of Zimbabwe’s people will end soon.
