Orbis Books Author Wins Christopher Award
Prestigious annual awards salute outstanding work
that affirms highest values of the human spirit
The 53rd annual Christopher Awards were presented on Thursday evening, February 28, at the Time-Life Building in New York. The internationally-recognized media awards honor the writers, producers, directors and illustrators in the publishing, film, broadcast TV and cable industries whose work expresses the highest values of the human spirit.

The awards were presented by The Christophers, an organization that uses the mass media to encourage people to recognize their personal power to make a positive difference in the world. The Christophers communicate this message through a weekly TV series, syndicated radio spots, and internationally-distributed newspaper columns and newsletters.

The Christophers was founded by Maryknoll Father James Keller who used the ancient Chinese proverb – "Better to light one candle than to curse the darkness"—as the Christopher credo. The awards salute media that remind audiences and readers, of all ages and faiths and of no particular faith, of their worth, individuality and power to positively impact and shape our world.

"This year, we had a remarkable 20 percent increase in the number of submissions," said Judith Trojan, Program Manager for the Christopher Awards. "More than 850 books for adults and young people, 55 feature films and 265 TV and cable programs were evaluated on the basis of their artistic excellence and their affirmation of the highest values of the human spirit."

Among the books that were submitted for Christopher Awards consideration was Orbis Book’s Choosing Mercy by Antoinette Bosco. This book was one of the six winning titles in the Books for Adults category. Other winners were, Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich, An Hour Before Daylight by Jimmy Carter, Freedom’s Daughters by Lynne Olson, Choosing Mercy by Antoinette Bosco, Aging with Grace by David Snowdon, Ph.D., and John Adams by David McCullough.
