More Signs of the Anti-Death Penalty Trend
- Pro-death penalty Governor George Ryan of Illinois suspends executions in his state after 13 Death Row inmates were proven innocent
- Three million American sign "Moratorium 2000" a national petition asking for all states to join Illinois in stopping executions
- Numerous religious organizations, including the U.S. Catholic Conference, the Rabbinical Assembly and Union of American Hebrew Congregations, as well as mainstream denominations join traditional pacifists such as the Quakers and Mennonites in opposing the death penalty
- Congress considers the Innocence Protection Act to insure that biological evidence is preserved and to prohibit the states from denying prisoners requests for DNA testing that could prove their innocence
- 700 members of Murder Victims Families for Reconciliation, all of whom have lost loved ones, issue a call for an "end to the same kind of violence that has deprived us . . . . no more death."
- The American Bar Association urges governs in the 36 capital punishment states to halt executions
