More Signs of the Anti-Death Penalty Trend

  • Pro-death penalty Governor George Ryan of Illinois suspends executions in his state after 13 Death Row inmates were proven innocent
  • Three million American sign "Moratorium 2000" a national petition asking for all states to join Illinois in stopping executions
  • Numerous religious organizations, including the U.S. Catholic Conference, the Rabbinical Assembly and Union of American Hebrew Congregations, as well as mainstream denominations join traditional pacifists such as the Quakers and Mennonites in opposing the death penalty
