Daniel Berrigan
Icons by William Hart McNichols

Introduction by Megan McKenna

“This book contains many faces of Christ Himself and faces that peer out at us seeking to express characteristics of Christ in history, in the church, in saints both old and contemporary, and in non-traditional holy people. Each person written here in icon and print is an icon of divine love, a particular path of discipleship, a glimpse of the face of Christ written in human flesh, among us still.”—From the introduction by Megan McKenna

Poet Daniel Berrigan and iconographer William Hart McNichols combine their distinctive gifts to convey the diverse faces of the church. They include martyrs, prisoners of conscience, theologians, mystics, men and women—the litany as diverse as the people of God, as rich and varied as the many paths of discipleship and piety. Over twenty icons include:

  • St. Joan of Arc
  • Blessed Padre Pio
  • Franz Jagerstatter
  • William Stringfellow
  • Maura O’Halloran
  • The Holy Prophet Elijah
  • St. Joseph
  • St. John
  • St. Francis
  • St. Ignatius
  • Daniel Berrigan, a Jesuit priest and poet, is well known for his witness for peace and his many books. These include Ezekiel: Vision in the Dust and Uncommon Prayer: A Book of Psalms. William Hart McNichols is a Jesuit priest and artist who has been painting icons since 1990. Author and artist live in the same Jesuit community in New York City.
