Experiencing Scripture in World Religions

Harold G. Coward, EDITOR

Faith Meets Faith Series
Paul F. Knitter, GENERAL EDITOR

An inside view of how the scriptures of world religions illuminate the lives and experience of their devotees.

February
ISBN 1-57075-298-2
176pp. Index 5-3/8 x 8-1/4
Paper $16.00

In contrast to books dealing with doctrines about the nature and authority of scripture in world religions, these essays gathered by Harold Coward offer an account of how devotees experience the scriptures. Followers of the Jewish, Sikh, Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhist Ways tell how scripture plays a role in their lives. The Jew, for example, “lives in Torah”; the Muslim “in the Qur’an”; while the Sikh finds the Adi Granth to be a living guru; and the Buddhist finds in the Sayings not divine truth but a “provisional guide to enlightenment.”

Chapters are by Eliezer Segal on Judaism; Wayne McCready on Christianity; Hanna Kassis on the Qur’an; Anantanand Rambachan on Hinduism; Harjot Oberoi on Sikhism; and Eva K. Neumaier on Buddhism.

Harold G. Coward is professor of philosophy and director of the Centre for Studies in Religion and Society at the University of Victoria. His previous books include Sacred Word and Sacred Text, Hindu-Christian Dialogue and Life After Death in World Religions.
