Refugees:
Persecution, famine, poverty, and civil wars have caused 175 million people to live outside the country of their birth. Refugee numbers continue to grow daily. Today we'll hear from the United Nations' Population Division, Joseph Chamie and from writer Charles Bowden, whose provocative article Outback Nightmares and Refugee Dreams, appears in the current issue of "Mother Jones" magazine.
Refugees:
Kathy Golden continues her conversation with writer Charles Bowden about the growing number of people fleeing from war but also from poverty. Bowden speaks about the global economy and its effects on everyone. He says that the only way to keep people where they are is to create conditions where they don't want to leave their own countries. How should we address the problems of indecent wages, little security, and few laws that protect people properly?
