Benziger, a division of Macmillan/McGraw-Hill, and the Maryknoll Missioners announce an exclusive partnership involving the creation of the publishing company's newest catechetical series for elementary school children entitled, Christ Jesus, the Way. As part of this unique alliance, Maryknoll has contributed hundreds of photos and stories from its award-winning Maryknoll magazine to the 18-volume series, detailing the experiences of priests, Brothers, Sisters and lay missioners ministering overseas and in the U.S.
The aim, according to Benziger, is to infuse Jesus' command "to go and teach all nations" in each lesson, reinforcing the missionary responsibility of every Christian, fostering evangelization and a commitment to social justice, and sowing the seeds of future priestly, religious and lay vocations.
"Through Christ Jesus, the Way, we hope to provide religious instruction with a global perspective, and to cultivate a missionary spirit in children," explains Cullen Schippe, vice president and publisher of Benziger. "So that beyond learning Christian concepts, a child becomes the Living Gospel—someone who loves Jesus, who loves the Church, is Jesus, is the Church."
"We are delighted to collaborate with Benziger," says Fr. Leo Shea, director of mission promotion, Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers. "For decades, religious Sisters teaching in schools and parishes were the greatest proponents of mission education and the work of Maryknoll to our children. Through these Benziger materials, we will be able to introduce mission values again to a new generation."
Christ Jesus, the Way provides parishes, Catholic schools and bilingual communities with a comprehensive, user-friendly religious formation program for grades K-8. The program is rooted in Scripture and faithful to Church teaching, and introduces students to real people of faith who exemplify lives of knowledge, love and service. The age-appropriate series exposes children to Church seasons and feasts, sacraments, prayers that every Catholic should know, tips on living a Christian life, and social justice concepts—all presented in a variety of modalities meant to spark creativity, activity and recollection.
Benziger, established in 1792, has long been a leading provider of Catholic religious and family life education for all ages, firmly based in the heritage and experience of the past and committed to a continuing standard of excellence. Its mission is "to renew the Gospel message every day."
Maryknoll Missioners are a community of priests, Brothers, Sisters, lay men and women, and families—1,200 strong—working to restore dignity and hope among people oppressed and poor in nearly 40 countries throughout Africa, Asia, Latin America and the United States. Together Benziger and Maryknoll are ideally suited to bring a rich Catholic perspective to this new and groundbreaking catechetical series.
